A MAN who subjected his wife to a prolonged assault at their Langho home has been ordered to pay her £1,000 compensation.
Hyndburn magistrates also ordered 47-year-old Mark Whelan to attend a domestic violence programme as part of their sentence.

Whelan, now of Garstang Road, Preston, was convicted after a trial of assaulting Tina Whelan. He was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison suspended for 18 months and made subject to community supervision for 18 months. As well as the compensation he was ordered to pay £300 costs.

The court had previously heard a clump of Mrs Whelan's hair had been pulled out during the attack, which had taken place in front of the couple's 10-year-old daughter.

"It was an aggravating factor that you denied the offence and made the children come to court to give evidence," said the magistrate.
