Frustrated by the slow housing market, Howard Baker, of Falcon and Foxglove, Manchester Road, has turned to the power of prayer at this "desperate time" for home-sellers.

Howard was alerted to the help St Joseph can give by a customer who told him statues of the carpenter saint should be buried in the gardens of people selling their property.

St Joseph is revered by Christians worldwide as the husband of Mary and earthly father of Jesus Christ, who found a humble home for the Holy Family at a stable in Bethlehem.

Howard promptly ordered two dozen "St Joseph Home Sale Kits" from a religious gifts supplier in America to give to clients.

He said: "The housing market is so dismal at the moment, I'm willing to try anything. My son and I did some Internet research and it does seem to be popular, especially in America.

"I am a great fan of the television comedy 'Father Ted' and must admit it does seem bizarre, but we might as well have a bit of fun as it's pretty dreary selling houses at the moment."

The packs come complete with statue, prayer and instructions. St Joseph must be buried exactly 12in. down in the garden, either facing the house or road, and sellers must say the Prayer of St Joseph.

Howard, who is a Burnley councillor, said the packs seem to be working. "The first seller that buried one in their garden sold their house in three days, which is excellent in the current climate."

The packs do come with extra advice though – sellers should ensure their home price reflects the true market value.
