CLITHEROE A defeated local rivals Whalley by the narrowest of margins in the East Lancashire Mixed Division One.

The top Clitheroe pairing of Mary Brass and Nick Thomas played a very strong Whalley first pair, losing the first set 6-4.

However, with Thomas' hard-hitting ground strokes and Brass's deft touches at the net, the Clitheroe pair turned things around to level the match by taking the second set 6-4.

On the other court, things were equally as tight, with Louise Burrill and Phil Mileham taking on the Whalley second pair.

The Clitheroe pair got off to a great start and took the first set 6-1, with Burrill placing some great shots down the line and lobbing the Whalley pair from the back of the court.

However, they didn't have it all their own way in the second set, with the Whalley pair coming back into the match, taking the set by 6-4.
So the match was evenly poised at the turn round.

Brass and Thomas continued their sparkling form and determination, beating their rivals in two straight sets.

On the other court, Burrill and Mileham couldn't quite do enough to win a set against the Whalley top pair, losing 6-4, 6-3.

Clitheroe won the match on the basis of the number of games won – a very close fought local derby indeed!
