CRAIG Sargeson's first half double was the backbone behind this latest Blues victory.
An accomplished first half performance saw Clitheroe recover from an early setback to fire four goals.

And that was more than enough to hand them their third straight victory, following the opening day disappointment against Mossley.

With that 2-0 defeat prompting a chorus of boos around some parts of Shawbridge, the home supporters applauded their side from the field this time around.

And for the second time in three days over the Bank Holiday weekend, Clitheroe recovered from falling behind early on to seal the three points.

Clitheroe almost opened the scoring in the first 30 seconds, only for Sargeson to fire wide following Carl Lomax's clever pass.

But in Salford's first real attack, they did take the lead when Jon Robinson was put through and he fired past James Mann.

The Blues responded well, with Bernard Morley stinging the fingertips of James Campbell, and from the resulting corner, Ryan Fisher headed straight at the City keeper.

A quick break then released Anthony Johnson, but his clever ball across for Morley was blasted woefully wide by the former Salford player.

But Clitheroe were soon level, as Sargeson was played in down the left, and he fired past Campbell.

Robinson almost restored City's lead within a minute, heading straight at Mann from Danny White's cross.

However, it was Clitheroe that grabbed the lead, with Dave Hankin's breakaway ending with Sargeson smashing a delightful shot past an exposed Campbell.

And two goals in two minutes just before the break virtually killed the game as a contest, with first Lomax taking advantage of a defensive mistake to slot into an empty net, and then Johnson poking home Scott Redhead's wonderful free kick.

A somewhat subdued second half saw Robinson fire wide, before Lomax curled two efforts over at the other end.

Substitute Chris Ward came close with an angled drive, but the Blues had done more than enough in the first half to seal the points.
