YOUNG sportsmen and women in Ribble Valley who struck gold at the 2008 Spar Lancashire Youth Games have been honoured by the borough's mayor.
The Ribble Valley squad returned from last month's Blackpool event with gold medals for netball and athletics. Now Ribble Valley Mayor John Hill has presented the high-flying youngsters with Certificates of Achievement.

More than 1,000 young athletes representing 14 North West boroughs competed in eight sports at the games. The Ribble Valley squad was sponsored by Castle Cement and received coaching and support from Ribble Valley Borough Council.

Sports development officer Peter Fletcher said: "Ribble Valley entered seven teams into the games. The standard was very high and to win gold not once but twice was a fantastic achievement."

Ribble Valley Mayor Coun. Hill added: "Congratulations go to the gold medallists, as well as our sports development team, for their fantastic achievement. I wish these youngsters every success in their sporting careers and hope to see them at the London Olympics in 2012!"

The Lancashire Youth Games has been running for 10 years and is regarded as the pinnacle of competition sport for the county's young sportsmen and women.

The triumphant youngsters are: Netball – Hannah Porter, Meg Wild, Shannon Smith, Olivia Bates, Millie Ramsey, Emilie Dyer, Alex Port, Charlotte Gatty, Mille Arnold. Athletics – Laura Chadwick, Ryan Lee Cattermole, Imogen Parr, Victoria Peel, Georgia Fellows, Sam Peel, Harry Russell, Callum Robinson, Benjamin Aspinall, Oliver Rigg, Jenny Mae Adamson, Abigail Gillibrand.
