Pubs in race to be crowned 'best in Britain'

TWO Ribble Valley pubs lead the field in a race to be named "The Great British Pub of the Year 2008."
The Kings Arms, Clitheroe, and the Shireburn Hotel, Hurst Green, are going forward to the finals and will chase the title at the London Hilton next month.
The Morning Advertiser's "Great British Pub Awards" involve a year-long search to find the nation's best pubs.
For Tony and Joanne Ridgway, the Kings Arms was their first pub two years ago. They crossed the road to take over their local and have turned the pub into a popular family venue. The Kings Arms is finalist in the Best Family Pub category.
The Shireburn Arms has won its heat in the Best Freehouse Category. Owned by Steven Alcock and his family for 15 years, the 17th Century inn is a listed building and offers facilities on a par with top-rated restaurants and hotels in an area well populated with premier eating and drinking venues.
